ARTIST STATEMENT
As a subject for painting, sunsets resist representation. Compositions and colors often fail to powerfully express the majesty, the emotion and beauty that infuses the experience. I observe that when I stare at the setting sun, a circular after-image is temporarily burned upon my retina. Every time my eye rests momentarily that spot starts to decay; to heal. But with each movement of the eye, a new spot begins its route in my retinal periphery. Each new spot is geometrically fixed to all the other spots. This accumulation of spots evokes the passage I want the viewer to see: a sunset – over time.
