Artist statement
I am a maker!
Since early childhood I have been driven to make art and create functional and none functional
objects. For me it doesn’t really matter what materials I use I love them all; from pencil, paint,
wood to plants in my garden each material is a vehicle to create.
The last few years of my life have been lessons in time and life priorities. Watching and being
part of my father passing; having a health scare, running a business, trying to be a good partner
and husband to my wife.
The current series of drawings and paintings, Vignettes and Portals, stem out of this urgency. A
clock ticking; they are a sort of short hand, to talk about my thoughts and feelings about my life
and the world we are living in.
The imagery I work with is based on the natural world, architecture, the broader landscape and
the world below our feet. I see it as a series of abstract marks, values, shapes and colors.
I work on canvas and paper primarily with raw pigments and various binders. This choice comes
from my interest in playing with color and its viscosity. I have a need to make marks and lines
which relate to my deep love of drawing and printmaking. The color is influenced by the
landscape I live within. Everyday out my windows I see the pageantry of the changing colors and
their relationships. These colors can range from earth tones to a more garish palette.
When I am painting or engaged in the process of making, my focus is that moment in time, the
rhythm of making marks and the magic of seeing and discovery.
