Artist Statement:
From the owner, Chrissy:
“He was born April 1, 2009. His full name is Shunka Wakan aka ”Johnny“.
He’s a Black & White spotted Pinto Quarter Horse pony.
We acquired him two years ago this August coming up . I was great friends with his owner Ponytail Bob Marks who was 73 years old and he was battling leukemia. After he passed we found out that he had then left Johnny to myself and my girls in his will to take care of him . He originally came from Monticello New York in 2016 to a farm in Bethany CT where we all met each other and became a Barn Family.”
“The word Shunka Wakan means ”Holy Dog“ or ”Spiritual Dog“ in Lakota. The horse was extremely important to the early Lakota people. It changed their way of life from a sedentary agricultural society to a nomadic hunting society. ” – Kenneth Ferguson
Sadly, Johnny passed away suddenly on his 13th birthday this year, April 1st, 2023. His memory will live on in my heart and the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
