“PROMISES”
Sofie Swann
January 30 – February 18, 2024
New abstract paintings by Sofie Swann will be featured this month in the exhibition Promises at Chroma Fine Art Gallery. The exhibition is on view now through February 18.
Swann’s paintings are autobiographical; the repetitive shapes form a language that allows her to visually share her memories and experiences. Swann was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. She was displaced as a teenager due to political upheaval, and lived in Boston, Massachusetts and Paris, France before finally settling in Connecticut. Her work aims to resolve feelings of disconnect through a mark-making conversation that yields a sense of connection and wholeness.
Her compositions embody a tension between chaos and structure. Swann’s visual vocabulary seems to reference a variety of natural phenomena: subatomic particles, cellular structures, celestial bodies, assembled pebbles, the façade of a structure, spangles shimmering on a flowing textile, nuanced atmospheric conditions. The marks are cerebral and heartfelt; she depicts emotion in motion. Some of the shapes touch while others bob separately, yet all are contained within a larger pictorial dialogue. Depth mingles on the picture plan. Layers perceived as located in the distance reverberate into and out of view, while conversing with the surface marks. In this way, Swann seems to embody past and present, and reconcile the passage of time with the current moment. The artist explains that her creative process revolves around “thoughts and emotions. I don’t paint what I see. I paint what I feel.”
“We’re delighted to shine a light on Sofie,” explains Chroma’s curator Rita Baunok. “Her paintings are universally resonant. She starts from a place of longing and ends with compositions that feel fulfilled, inviting, resolved. One can’t help but feel uplifted and inspired.”
During this Valentine’s season, why not share “Promises” with a loved one? A promise is – after all – a pledge to fulfill, a vow that connects people together through a proposed action. Sophie Swann’s solo exhibition is a treasure to behold and an experience to be shared.
