Chroma Fine Art Gallery invites you on a delightful visual journey by way of their current exhibition, “El Paseo,” which features the work of painter Sergey Stepanenko and ceramicist David Hughes. The exhibition runs through March 17, with an opening reception on Saturday, March 2 from 3:00-7:00pm.
“El Paseo” presents a new body of work by Sergey Stepanenko, which reflects his memories from a recent trip to Spain. Inspired by his encounters with art, music, architecture, and the natural and urban scenes; Stepanenko returned home full of inspiration. Back in his studio in Norwalk, CT he recounted and re-envisioned the sights, colors, sounds, and vistas, including the scenic Toledo River, Santiago de Compostela’s historic Cathedral, Bilbao’s picturesque streets, and paintings by Diego Velasquez.
David Hughes brings his one-of-a-kind ceramic work to enhance the atmosphere of the space with his exquisite, solid forms. “The colors and shapes he uses are similar to those found in traditional European ceramics,” explains curator Rita Baunok, “but his surfaces are unique. I’ve never seen anything like them before – they are so luminous!”
Hughes first gravitated to ceramics, compelled by “the need to knead.” After success growing his ceramics vocation in Chelsea, NYC in the late 1990s, he moved to Katonah in 2003, where he currently teaches ceramics and makes work full-time. Hughes has experimented with a variety of firing temperatures and technique, including the use of crystalline glazes, which can be seen in those luminous works on view. Rita Baunok became aware of Hughes’ work at the Bedford Art Show. “I just knew his ceramics and Sergey’s paintings would be magical together.”
Walking through the “El Paseo” exhibition, Baunok says, is “like a leisurely stroll through the historic center of European town. The gallery glows with the emergence of spring, which is now bathed by a light and bright Mediterranean palette.” Tones of ochre, cerulean, olive, terracotta, and bisque flit across the walls and pedestals. “The works by Sergey and David have such a complementary quality and patina. I am encouraged to slowly linger over every piece, as each one contains such depth, charm, and interest.”
