“If I Were a Flower”
May 13 – June 15
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 17, 4-8 p.m.
Chroma Fine Art Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, If I Were a Flower, which features new abstract floral paintings by Sofie Swann. The exhibition is on view from May 13 through June 15. All are welcome to attend the Opening Reception, which will be held on May 17 from 4:00 – 8:00pm.
This is Swann’s second solo exhibition at Chroma, but the first time this new series of pop florals will be showcased. “We are so happy to be the first gallery to feature this exquisite body of work. I am in love with this show!” enthuses curator Rita Baunok.
A neighbor’s dormant garden was the seed that inspired Swann to begin the If I Were a Flower series. “In wintertime, flowers go dormant, and you can’t imagine how they will survive.” But spring comes, and they emerge as healthy, robust flowers.” Swan is moved by parallels between nature’s growth cycle and the human condition: fallow periods that seem hopeless are often followed by times of great flourishing. “Like a flower, I turn my head to the generative warmth of the sun. I paint what I feel. I hope viewers feel the spirit of renewal and abundance that I put into each brush stroke.”
Swann’s work is characterized by dense patterning, subtle coloration, and nuanced texture. “I am drawn to repetition. The rhythmic recurrence of shape and color creates a structured harmony that allows the mind to rest. It fosters a sense of predictability and balance, and creates the impression of continuity and infinity.” In the If I Were a Flower series, Swann’s confident mark-making feels especially loose and organic. The layers of visual forms play off each other, much like the aroma notes of a fine fragrance. The paintings undulate with a joyful energy.
Artworks range in size from large 72” x 72” canvases to small 4” x 4” painted cubes. These Petite Swann cubes blur the line between sculpture and painting. They sit beautifully on a console table or shelf, dotting little touches of art around a room. They are elegant and versatile, making them perfect for gift-giving. Stop by the gallery and see for yourself that, in the presence of these buoyant blooms, it is impossible not to feel refreshed and uplifted.
