Maurice Golubov – “Miniatures”

Chroma Fine Art Gallery is honored to present Miniatures, a solo exhibition of works by Maurice Golubov (1905–1987), an artist whose life and practice embodied a quiet rebellion against convention. The show runs from October 14 through November 9, with an opening reception on October 18, from 3–7 p.m., in conjunction with the Katonah Art Walk.
Golubov’s miniatures are among the most remarkable aspects of his oeuvre. Within just a few square inches of paper, he created richly interwoven compositions where color, form, and space expand far beyond their physical boundaries. These works, as highly finished as his large canvases, carry the same density and complexity that defined his lifelong pursuit of abstraction. Rather than treating them as studies, Golubov invested them with intensity, producing luminous microcosms that resonate with spiritual and poetic force.
Born in Russia and immigrating to the United States in 1917, Golubov went on to exhibit alongside artists such as Rothko, Pollock, and Gorky. He was a member of the American Abstract Artists group, and his works can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Smithsonian and the Jewish Museum, among others. Throughout his career, he remained committed to intricate, geometric abstraction, often painting miniature works on scraps of paper while employed as a commercial illustrator. These intimate compositions—cut out, carried home in his pockets, and saved in sketchbooks—are a testament to his devotion to the act of making.
